I painted this for my bedroom, choosing the wood background to match that of a bed I made out of zebra wood. There are many elements in this painting, including an Ukiyo-e by Hokosai, an Archie comic strip from 1968 and a poem by Anna Akhmatova, called Nas Chetvero -- There Are Four of Us, from 1961. I chose the two written works to provide a sharp cultural contrast. The skull is an actual human skull, which I bought just as a model for the painting. |
