The roads were graying out from the snow and so peaceful. I had wanted to combine that feeling of snow, painted so much better by Sarasov, along with the feeling of one of my models. I had hoped to get the same feeling as a Nazarenko painting I admired in Russia. At the same time, as I've been reading The Black Book of Russian Jewry(Ehrenburg and Grossman), which has filled me with images of how these roads were used in 1941. So this painting combines, peace and hope, death and desperation, and the endless history of a country and people I have come to love. |
