This painting started out being about the beauty of Spring, with a peaceful model surrounded by pretty shapes, ripe fruit and a blue sky. But, then, reality started to set in -- a German map from the war showing areas where all Jews were killed, a medal for Soviet bravery in kicking out the Fascists, a variety of comic strips repurposed for political themes, a picture of a Polish orphan, and many other objects flowing through. So the thought still relates to Spring, but where and when and why so much suffering of our own making? |
