Prayer
Series:Redemption
Size:36x36
Medium:Oil on canvas
The inspiration for this painting came from a recent trip to Ukraine. I visited several churches there and enjoyed the tranquility found in some of the places, and was also quite fascinated by the long and complex history and interaction between religion and government in the region. While thinking about these issues, I started to sketch some sliced oranges, and I was particularly interested in the way the light cast between the layers. The peacefulness of the light tied for me with prayer. The building in the globe is of course The Empire State Building. The match book is based on an early communist design that was revived during the post-communist elections as well. The image on the right is an Egon Shiele painting, and on the left is an excerpt from Dr. Strange, who provides his own viewpoint on the struggle of religion.

S. David says:
And Heaven is
What you dream
A long cool drink
An orangeade and
Fresh slices of orange
For your desert Soul
And the telling
Of the future
In your crystal
Ball
To hold her body
Warm alive
In your arms
And yet
And yet
You pray and
Your prayer
Resounds to
The Heavens above
Heard and
Denied
