I got the idea for this painting when reading a children's book called The Lost Thing, by Shaun Tan. It has lovely illustrations in which the borders of all of the pictures are cut outs from various newspaper articles and ads and so forth. It has a very industrial feel. I combined that visual feeling with a comment a friend of mine made regarding the complexity of relationships to form this painting. The jar of jelly is hot pepper jelly from Pike Place Market. The chemical formulae are primarily for controlled substances, often used to improve or mask the heart's emotions. If you aren't up to speed on modern chemistry you can consult erowind.
