There is a Bauhaus song that begins "The Virgin Mary's tired, so tired..." It seems to me there are not enough paintings of Mary prior to giving birth. Here she is resting on a park bench in Central Park, contemplating. The trees are a reference to Gockel's Fun in the Sun series. The biblical passage in the back is Zecharia 6:1, which was one of several passages I was considering for the painting, including laws on adultry from Deuteronomy and a section on the fracturing of the tribes of Israel which, like this passage, was from prophets. But Zecharia, who lived around 520 BCE, is an apocolyptic prophet whose message resonates well with later events. The passage starts: "Once again I raised up my eyes and saw, and behold, four chariots were emerging from between two mountains..."
