| Series: | Still Life | | Size: | 9x12 | | Medium: | Oil on linen | The central image in the painting came from a dream of mine in which a brilliant but crazy musician handed me some notes, which is what i turned into the central letter. It is also based on Pushkin's diaries, which he illustrated, although i couldn't find any online, but saw them in Russia. The letter is filled with various quotes, including Akhmatova's vecherum, Neruda, Revelations 13:11, and various rock and roll songs as well as of course many other things. Sketches include Pushkin and some Schiele drawings.
The letter underneath, in Arabic, was written by my friend Khawla in lovely penmanship. It is a letter from a woman to her lover... someone she has never met and is not yet born... in which she is wondering whether he will ever exist and whether she will ever meet him.
The postcard in the upper right is from Le Cuir Triomphant, some French erotica from the 1920s. |
